A Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) is a chauffeur-driven transport service that must be booked in advance.
Unlike taxis, private hire vehicles cannot be hailed on the street or wait at taxi ranks. Every journey is arranged through a prior booking. Typical services include airport transfers, business travel, long-distance journeys and medical transportation. Vehicles operate under a special licence in accordance with German passenger transport law (§ 49 PBefG).
